Referees Cannot Rescind Cards After a Match

It is early in the Youth season, and we have already received two reports of situations where Red Cards have been rescinded by the Referee immediately after the match. This must not happen.

All South Carolina Referees should note the following statements excerpted directly from USSF’s Advice to Referees:

“A displayed Red or Yellow Card may be cancelled by the Referee only if play has not restarted.”

“The failure of the Referee to include in the match report accurately and fully all cards displayed during play is a serious breach of the Referee’s responsibilities.”

Bottom line on this issue – If you have Cautioned or Sent Off a player during the match, you may not change your mind at the end of the match, and then fail to report the card.

Please remember that all Red Cards given must be reported using our Web-Based Referee Match Report. If you believe that you made a mistake in issuing the Card, you may include complete facts in your Match Report. At that point, it will be up to the League or other competent authority to take any additional action with your report.

Please contact me if you have any questions concerning this important policy that must be followed by all USSF Referees in South Carolina.
